I had a family portrait photography shoot recently and I wanted to try a technique I’d done a while back. My previous ‘glass floor’ shot had been done with 2 children (I had used my niece and nephew as guinea pigs) and I really liked the result but wanted to do it with a family group so when I had a call asking for a family portrait photo that was ‘intersting’ and ‘a little different’ this sprang to mind.

It’s a simple enough shot to do but requires a little bit of tweaking in photoshop to get the effect. Basically you take a photo of each person lying down and then arrange them in photoshop, well, however you like. The trouble with composite shots like this is they take a little longer as you have to photograph each person individually but my portrait sessions are as long or a short as they need to be, I’m not like a psychiatrist that kicks you out after an hour! It’s worth mentioning that I am only basing that on what I have seen on TV in terms of psychiatry, I’ve never been for treatment or anything, some might well be as liberal with their time as I am. Anyway, back to the shot. Once the people have been rotated and re-sized you can process the shot however you like. In this case it has quite a modern, high contrast type look but the effect works equally well in black and white or with crazy lomo type colouring.
