          Oldshoremore and Sandwood Bay

A couple more shots landscape photos from our recent trip to the top end of Scotland. These were from the beautiful beaches of Oldshoremore and Sandwood bay. These are really more seascape photos and whenever I see a bit of turbulent water or waves crashing on rocks I always do some with the opaque 10 stop filter to really slow down the exposure and get a silky look to the water, it’s often a good trick if the light isn’t overly dramatic. When the horizon is pretty flat I also use a harder edged graduated filter, this just has a more pronounced transition and ensures the sky is balanced out right down to the horizon. In most cases I used a 3 stop grad in conjunction with the 10 stop, this really darkens the sky and makes for a bit more of a moody shot, the skies were pretty dark but luckily they didn’t really break on us and soak us to the bone!

The first two are at Sandwood bay which is about a 3 mile walk from where you park, we had originally planned on camping on the beach but weren’t 100% sure it would stay dry so we stayed at nice B&B. If you are up that way I really can’t recommend the old school near Kinlochbervie highly enough (www.oldschoolhotel.co.uk).  Alan who is the chef and owner there is a greak bloke, takes a keen interest in his guests and the attention to detail at the place was really great.
